Illustration Friday: Village

About ten days ago I visited the Metropolitan museum in New York and took a tour of Japanese art. I really liked the way they rendered their animals. They didn't look quite realistic, yet they had all the features required to identify them to species. So I decided that for this week's topic I'd try my hand at Japanese style.

Here's a photo of the art my illustration is based on:

The background is made of gold leaves.

Illustration Friday: Shelter

Update:

If you notice, the bird is a bit more cartoonish than the scarecrow, so I decided to change it to a slightly more realistic bird, a bluebird.

Illustration Friday: Hat

It's too late to submit it to Illustration Friday, but I did have this ready way before the deadline. I just couldn't upload it to the blog. Argh...

Well, here it is anyway.

I'm new to this medium (watercolors), so this drawing was a sort of an experiment. I do like the way the leaves turned out, and the fact that the pen I used got washed off with the water seems to add somethings. Totally not what I intended, yet nice nonetheless.
